Progressive Drawing Die Process

As a progressive drawing die forms a part from a flat metal sheet, the material must flow into the contours of the die to achieve the desired shape. This material flow is carefully controlled through a combination of applied pressure on the blank and lubrication on either the die surface or the blank itself.

If the material flows too freely, it can lead to wrinkling in the finished part. To prevent this, additional pressure is applied or lubrication is reduced, which limits the material flow and forces it to stretch or thin as it conforms to the die. However, if too much pressure is applied, the material may become excessively thin, leading to cracks or fractures.

Metal drawing is a delicate balance—the key is to find the optimal combination of pressure and lubrication that prevents both wrinkling and tearing. Achieving this balance ensures a high-quality, structurally sound part.

As a general guideline, a draw radius of approximately three times the material thickness is recommended as a starting point. If cracking occurs during forming, it typically indicates that the tooling has been machined metal-safe, allowing for the radius to be increased for improved formability. In some cases, part specifications may require a small radius beneath the flange, which can sometimes be achieved in a single draw rather than through multiple drawing operations, depending on the material and design requirements.
