In progressive deep drawing, as a flat metal sheet is gradually formed into a complex shape, the material must be allowed to flow into the contours of the die. This flow is controlled by carefully applied pressure on the blank and precise lubrication—either on the die surface or the blank itself.
If material flows too easily, it can lead to wrinkling in the part. To correct this, pressure is increased or lubrication is reduced to restrict material movement, forcing it to stretch or thin. However, applying excessive pressure can over-thin the material, resulting in tearing or cracking.
The key to a successful deep-drawn part lies in striking the right balance between preventing wrinkles and avoiding breakage.
As a general guideline, the initial drawing radius should be approximately three times the material thickness. If cracks appear during the draw, it indicates the tool has been designed metal-safe, allowing room to increase the radius. When the part specification requires a small radius under the flange, this may be achieved in a single draw instead of multiple draws, depending on the design and material flow characteristics.
