Progressive dies are used in higher-volume production and are designed to operate at high rates of speed. MTS manufactures high-quality, reliable and cost-effective progressive dies for the automotive, appliance, office furniture, and aerospace industries. We have the expertise and technology to design, test and manufacture progressive tools that meet a broad range of manufacturing challenges
Progressive stamping is a metalworking method that can encompass punching, coining, bending and several other ways of modifying metal raw material, combined with an automatic feeding system.
The feeding system pushes a strip of metal (as it unrolls from a coil) through all of the stations of a progressive stamping die. Each station performs one or more operations until a finished part is made. The final station is a cutoff operation, which separates the finished part from the carrying web. The carrying web, along with metal that is punched away in previous operations, is treated as scrap metal. Both are cut away, knocked down (or out of the dies) and then ejected from the die set, and in mass production are often transferred to scrap bins via underground scrap material conveyor belts.
The progressive stamping die is placed into a reciprocating stamping press. As the press moves up, the top die moves with it, which allows the material to feed. When the press moves down, the die closes and performs the stamping operation. With each stroke of the press, a completed part is removed from the die.
Since additional work is done in each "station" of the die, it is important that the strip be advanced very precisely so that it aligns within a few thousandths of an inch as it moves from station to station. Bullet shaped or conical "pilots" enter previously pierced round holes in the strip to assure this alignment since the feeding mechanism usually cannot provide the necessary precision in feed length.
Progressive stamping can also be produced on transfer presses. These are presses that transfer the components from one station to the next with the use of mechanical "fingers". For mass production of stamped parts which do require complicated in-press operations, it is always advisable to use a progressive press. One of the advantages of this type of press is the production cycle time. Depending upon the part, productions can easily run well over 800 parts/minute. One of the disadvantages of this type of press is that it is not suitable for high precision deep drawing which is when the depth of the stamping exceeds the diameter of the part. When necessary, this process is performed upon a transfer press, which run at slower speeds, and rely on the mechanical fingers to hold the component in place during the entire forming cycle. In the case of the progressive press, only part of the forming cycle can be guided by spring-loaded sleeves or similar, which result in concentricity and ovality issues and non uniform material thickness. Other disadvantages of progressive presses compared to transfer presses are: increased raw material input required to transfer parts, tools are much more expensive because they are made in blocks with very little independent regulation per station; impossibility to perform processes in the press that require the part leave the strip (example beading, necking, flange curling, thread rolling, rotary stamping etc.).
The dies are usually made of tool steel to withstand the high shock loading involved, retain the necessary sharp cutting edge, and resist the abrasive forces involved.
The cost is determined by the number of features, which determine what tooling will need to be used. It is advised to keep the features as simple as possible to keep the cost of tooling to a minimum. Features that are close together produce a problem because it may not provide enough clearance for the punch, which could result in another station. It can also be problematic to have narrow cuts and protrusions.
Pierce & Cut Die Stamping is a very cost-effective way to quickly stamp flat, “rectangular” shaped parts such as shims, spacers, and plates. A benefit of Pierce & Cut Die Stamping is that raw material is better utilized reducing the total amount of scrap material produced over other stamping methods.
Parts are produced when the feed system pushes (strip or coil stock) of raw material into the Pierce & Cut Die; at each stroke or cycle a finished flat part will be cut off the end of the strip. This type of die requires that the raw material width is cut to the size needed for the part. The feed rate of the material is determined by the length of the part. Longer parts need more time per stroke to get the strip in position for the next stroke. Thickness also influences that feed rate. Thicker parts need the press to run a bit slower than thinner parts. Pierce & Cut Dies punch out holes and notches on the first stroke, and then the second and final stroke is the cut-off, where the completed part is cut from the strip. Once cut from the strip finished parts will be exit the die and will fall onto a chute or slider where they flow into the collection bin. The scrap is typically punched through the die and is collected under the press, or next to the press using chutes or slides.
METS can design and build “bending and forming” tools, usually considered a secondary operation where a flat blank or part is placed into the tool and formed and bent with one or more operation or single press cycle, Usually lower volume parts will be formed and produced from secondary bending and forming tools.
Bend/Form Dies are used to bend, form, or draw the material or part into a variety of angles and shapes. This can be done as a secondary tool and operation, or it can be built into a progressive die.
METS Precision-Tool uses a variety of 2D and 3D cad/cam Software to develop, design, and plan the layout of our dies. (see below for the full software list & details). We have the resources to build a die for any application. When high volumes of production are expected, we can build a dependable tool with longevity in mind. We can also produce low-cost tools for prototyping and sampling applications. Die protection is always on our mind, and DACO Precision-Tool can build in sensors that will help prevent costly damage to the die.
Brackets (Computer & Mounting). Brackets for various Computer applications. PC Card Computer Brackets - Various standard and custom designs; Mounting brackets - threaded and non threaded style all could punch in our factory.
Riveting die is a sturdy and attractive way to make one part joins in custom metal . This tooling add one vibrating disk.The center small parts will be in the progressive die by vibrating disk. Here you'll find this riveting tools is easy riveting and the speed is very fast,neerly 120ps/munite.
Compound Die Stamping is the process where the die separates or blanks the part from a steel strip in one stroke. A Compound Die will perform multiple cuts or punches in one stroke, as compared to multiple strokes. This is a very cost effective method for stamping medium to high volume parts while keeping labor and die costs down. Compound Dies are often used to stamp simpler flat parts such as washers.
Here at METS Precision-Tool it’s our goal to design and build our Compound Dies to exceed 100 strokes per minute to support high volume production. We can achieve this by building in sensors and other accessories to protect the die from damage. Cycle time is always kept in mind when designing and building our Compound Die tooling. We can build the die to stamp the part at the accuracy you need.
Parts are produced when the feed system pushes (strip or coil stock) of raw material into the Compound Die; at each stroke or cycle a finished flat part will blanked or released from the raw material. The feed rate of the material is determined by the size of the part. Larger parts need more time to exit the die, where smaller parts exit quicker allowing for faster run times. Typically, compound dies do not require a cut-off station because the parts are blanked through from the strip, but many times is added to help manage scrap material. Finished parts will be removed from the die by a knock-out and will fall onto a chute or slider where they flow into the collection bin. The scrap will exit the die in strip form or in piece form depending on if you’ve included a scrap cut-off station. Scrap can be collected in bins or hoppers on the exit end of the die

Metal stamping includes a variety of sheet-metal forming manufacturing processes, such
as punching using a machine press or stamping press, blanking, embossing, bending, flan
ging, and coining. This could be a single stage operation where every stroke of the press pro
duce the desired form on the sheet metal part, or could occur through a series of stages.
Lead frames are the metal structures inside a chip package that carry signals from the die to the outside.
Leadframe for a QFP package
The die inside the package is typically glued to the lead frame, and then bond wires attach the die pads to the leads. In the last stage of the manufacturing process, the lead frame is moulded in a plastic case, and outside of the lead frame is cut-off, separating all leads.

General Draw Radius Guideline
|Metal Thickness||Minimum Radius||Maximum Radius|
|.015 to .020||.156||.250|
|.021 to .030||.187||.281|
|.031 to .040||.187||.312|
|.041 to .050||.187||.343|
|.051 to .062||.250||.375|
|.063 to .093||.312||.437|
|.094 to .125||.344||.468|
As a general rule, 3 times of metal thickness can be used for a start point. If the part shows evidence of cracked, the tool has been machined metal safe, thus allowing for additional radius. The part specification may require a small radius under the flange that may be achieved with one draw, as opposed to several draws to size the radius.
